How to speed up Windows 10

How to speed up Windows 10

About what version of the OS from Microsoft was not discussed, one of the most frequent questions – how to make it faster. In this manual we’ll talk about why Windows 10 slows down and how to speed it up, which can affect its performance and what actions can improve it in certain situations.

It will not go about improving the performance of your computer by changing any hardware characteristics, but only about what most often causes the brakes of Windows 10 and how it can be fixed, thus speeding up the OS.

In my other articles on a similar topic, there are often comments like “I useI have such a program to speed up the computer and I have it quick. “My opinion on this matter: automatic “accelerators” are not particularly useful (especially hanging at startup), and when using them in manual mode, you should still understand what exactly they are doing and how.

Startup programs are the most common reason for slow work

One of the most common reasons for the slow operation of Windows 10, as, indeed, the previous versions of the OS users – those programs that run automatically when you log on to the system: they not only increase the boot time of the computer, but also can negatively affect performance already in working hours.

Many users may not even be to see that they have something in the autoload, or to be sure that everything there is necessary for work, but in most cases it is not.
Programs in Startup

Below are examples of some programs that can run automatically, consume computer resources, but do not bring particular benefit in constant work.

  • Programs of printers and scanners – almost all who have a printer, scanner or MFP, automatically download and various (pieces of 2-4) programs from their manufacturer. At the same time, for the most part, nobody uses them (programs), and they will be printed and scanned without launching these programs – in your usual office and graphics applications.
  • Programsfor downloading anything, torrent clients – if you are not busy constantly downloading any files from the Internet, then there is no need to keep uTorrent, MediaGet or something like that at startup. When needed (when downloading a file that should be opened through the appropriate program), they will start themselves. At the same time, constantly running and distributing something torrent client, especially on a laptop with a conventional HDD, can lead to really noticeable system brakes.
  • Cloud storage that you do not use. For example, in Windows 10, OneDrive is started by default. If you do not use it, it is not needed at startup.
  • Unknown programs -that in the list of startup you have a significant number of programs about which you know nothing and never used them. It can be programs of the manufacturer of a laptop or a computer, and maybe some secretly installed software. Look on the Internet, what kind of programs are on their behalf – with a high probability of their being in autoload is not necessary.

For details on how to view and remove programs in startup, I recently wrote in the Startup instructions in Windows 10. If you want to make the system work faster, keep only what is really needed.

By the way, in addition to the programs in startup, examine the list of installed programs in the “Programs and Features” section of the control panel. Remove what you do not need and keep only the software you are using on your computer.

Stops the Windows 10 interface

Recently, on some computers and laptops, the lag of the Windows 10 interface with the latest updates has become a common problem. In some cases, the cause of the problem is the default CFG (Control Flow Guard) function, whose function is to protect against exploits exploiting memory access vulnerabilities.

The threat is not too frequent and, if you get rid of the brakes of Windows 10 – more valuable than providing additional security features, you can turn off CFG

  1. Go to the Defender Security Center (and Use the icon in the notification area or through Settings – Updates and Security – Windows Defender) and open the “Manage applications and browser” section.Managing Windows applications and memory 10
  2. At the bottom of the settings, find the “Protection from exploits” section and click “Exploit Protection Settings”. Windows Protect Options 10
  3. In the “Control flow protection” field (CFG), select “Off. By default. ”
    Disable CFG on Windows 10
  4. Confirm the settings change.

Disabling CFG should work right away, but I would recommend restarting the computer (note that in Windows 10 shutdown and activation is not the same as rebooting).

Processes Windows 10 shipping processor or memory

Sometimes it happens that the wrong operation of some background processcauses the brakes of the system. You can identify such processes using the Task Manager.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select & nbsp; “Task Manager.” If it is displayed in a compact form, at the bottom left, click on “Details.”
  2. Click the “Details” tab and sort by CPU column (clicking on it with the mouse).
    CPU usage in Windows 10
  3. Pay attention to the processes that use the maximum CPU time (except for “Inactivity of the system”).

If among these processes there are those that are actively using the processor all the time (or a significant amount of RAM), search the Internet for what process it is and, depending on what is found out, take actionI.

Tracking Functions in Windows 10

Many are well-read that Windows 10 spies on its users. And if I personally do not have any concerns about this, then in terms of the impact on the speed of the system, such functions can have a negative impact.

For this reason, their shutdown can be quite appropriate. For more information about these features and how to turn them off, read the article How to turn off Windows Tracking 10.

Applications in the Start menu in Windows 10

Immediately after installation or upgrade to Windows 10, in the start menu you will find a set of live application tiles. They also use the resources of the system (albeit usually insignificantly) to update and display information. Do you use them?

Start menu programs

If not – a reasonable step will be at least to remove them from the start menu or turn off live tiles (right click – unfasten from the initial screen) or even delete.

Drivers

Another reason for the slow performance of Windows 10, with more users than you might expect – the lack of original hardware drivers. This is especially true for video card drivers, but may also apply to SATA drivers, the chipset in general, and other devices.

Driver information in Windows 10

Despite the fact that the new OS seems to have “learned” to automatically install a large number of original hardware drivers, it is not superfluous to go into the device manager (through the right click on the “Start” button), and look into the property (video cards first) to the “Driver” tab. If Microsoft is listed as the provider, download and install the drivers from the official site of the manufacturer of your laptop or computer, and if it’s a video card, then from NVidia, AMD or Intel, depending on the model.

Graphic effects and sounds

I can not say that this item (disabling graphics effects and sounds) can seriously increase the speed of Windows 10 on modern computers, but on an old PC or laptop can give some performance gains.

To disable graphic effects, right-click on the “Start” button and select “System”, and then, on the left – “Additional system parameters ». On the Advanced tab, in the Performance section, click Options.

Performance settings

Here you can, by selecting the item “Ensure the best performance”, turn off all the animations and effects of Windows 10 at once. You can also leave some of them, without which the work becomes not very convenient – for example, unfolding and minimizing windows.

Additionally, press the Windows keys (the emblem key) + I, go to the Accessibility section – Other options and disable the item “Play animation in Windows”.

Also, in the “Parameters” of Windows 10, the section “Personalization” – “Colors”, turn off the transparency for the start menu, taskbar and notification center, it will also have a positive effect on the overall performance of the slow system.

To turn off event sounds, right-click on the start button and select “Control Panel,” and then click “Sound.” On the “Sounds” tab you can turn on the “Silent” sound scheme and Windows 10 no longer have to access the hard disk in the file search and start playing the sound at certain events.

Unwanted and malicious programs

If your system does not understandably slows down, and no methods help, then there is a possibility of malicious and unwanted programs on your computer, and many of these programs are “not visible” to antiviruses, no matter how good it is.

Recommendation now, and in the future, occasionally check your computer with utilities like AdwCleaner or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in addition to your antivirus.

If you experience slow browsers, among other things, you should look at the list of extensions and disable all those that you do not need or, worse, are not known. Often the problem is in them.

I do not recommend Windows 10 for speedup

And now a list of some things I would not recommend doing to hypothetically speed up the system, but which are often recommended here and there on the Internet.

  1. Disabling the Windows 10 paging file – often recommended if you have a significant amount of RAM, to extend the life spanand SSD and similar things. I would not do this: first of all, there will not be a performance increase with a high probability, and some programs might not even start without a swap file, even if you have 32 GB of RAM. In this case, if you are a novice user, you may not even understand, and why, in fact, they do not start.
  2. Constantly “clean the computer of garbage”. Some on a daily basis or automatically clean out the cache of browsers from the computer, clean the registry, clean up temporary files with CCleaner and similar programs. Despite the fact that the use of such utilities can be useful and convenient, your actions can not always lead to the desired result, you need to understand what exactly is being done. For example, clearing the browser cache is only needed if there are problems that can be solved theoretically with the help of the browser. By itself, the cache in browsers is designed specifically to speed up loading pages and really speeds up it.
  3. Disable unnecessary Windows services 10. Same as with the swap file, especially if you are not very good at this – when there is a problem with the operation of the Internet, the program or something else, you may not understand and do not remember that it is caused as once disabled by the “unnecessary” service.
  4. Keep the startup programs (and indeed, use them) “To speed up the computer.” They can not only not accelerate, but also slow down its work.
  5. Disable index files in Windows 10. With the possible exception of those cases where the SSD is installed on your computer.
  6. Disable services. See What services can I disable in Windows 10.

Additional Information

In addition to all of the above, I can recommend:

  • Keep Windows 10 updated (however, it is not difficult, because updates are installed forcibly), monitor the status of the computer, programs in startup, the presence of malicious software.
  • If you feel confident user, use licensed or free software from official sites, have not faced viruses for a long time, then it is possible to consider the option of using only built-in protection tools Windows 10
instead of third-party antiviruses and firewalls, which will also speed up the system.
  • Watch for free space on the system partition of the hard drive. If its there is not enough (less than 3-5 GB), it is almost guaranteed to lead to problems with performance. Moreover, if your hard disk is divided into two or more partitions, I recommend using the second of these sections only for data storage, but not for installing the programs – they should be better placed on the system partition (if you have two physical disks, this recommendation can be neglected) .
  • It’s important: do not keep two or more third-party antivirus software on your computer – most people know about it, but it’s impossible to work with Windows after installation of two antiviruses it is necessary on a regular basis.

It is also worth noting that the reasons for the slow operation of Windows 10 can be caused not only by some of the above, but also by a number of other problems, sometimes more serious ones: for example, a failed hard drive, overheating and others.

On this all, all the good!
